Original and Reproduction: The Physics of Presence

Evgeny Fleysher · 11 July 2026

A reproduction transmits an image. An original transmits presence. These are different things, and the difference is not snobbery — it is physics.

Step up to an oil painting and look at it from the side. You will see relief: the brushstroke stands above the canvas, the paint lies in layers, the light has something to hold on to. Take one step — and the highlight moves to another facet; the work has changed slightly along with you. A print cannot do this: it is flat, and light slides across it as across glass. An original lives in three dimensions, and therefore it lives in the hours of the day — one painting in the morning, another in the evening.

An oil painting is not a picture. It is an object that holds a state.

The trace of the hand

Every brushstroke is a decision. Where, with what pressure, in which second. Before an original you stand exactly where the artist stood, and you see the trace of his choice — not the result, but the movement itself. A reproduction hands you the outcome and throws away the path. Yet a state is transmitted precisely by the path: the hand does not lie; it paints what it is full of.

That is why an original keeps working on the wall every day, while a poster wears out in a week. Information the brain absorbs and files away. Presence cannot be absorbed — you can only be near it. It does not inform you about calm or strength; it is them, and so it keeps giving them again and again.

A print is information about a painting. An original is its body.

I make both: a print on canvas is an honest way to let an image into your home for less money, and there is nothing wrong in that. But when the point is for a painting to work with your state for years — you need the original. Not for status. For the physics of presence, which cannot be printed.
