Put your hand on something hot and the body answers before you have time to think. Pain is not an enemy. Pain is a message — the most honest message you will ever receive: it cannot go unheard, cannot be argued down, cannot be postponed until tomorrow. The body says: here is the boundary beyond which destruction begins. Come back.
As long as we are talking about the body, we all agree. You burn yourself, you pull your hand away; nobody argues with a burn. But the moment it is the soul that hurts and not the hand, the logic somehow changes: we start looking for someone to blame, muffling the signal, calling the pain an injustice, an error in the design of the world. Which is to say, we behave like a driver who tapes over a warning light on the dashboard. The light has gone out. The engine is still broken. The fault has not gone anywhere — only the knowledge of it has.
Pain is not a punishment. Pain is navigation.
A marker of deviation
Pain is a marker of deviation. Each of us has a route — not a career and not a list of goals, but an inner direction, the movement towards your real self. While you walk it, the system stays silent: health is not felt, happiness does not analyse itself. Step off the route and the signal comes. And it is a precise signal, with feedback built in: the strength of the pain shows the speed of the deviation. Mild irritation — you have drifted a little. A heaviness that will not lift for weeks — you have been going the wrong way for a long time. Despair — you are running the wrong way at full speed, and the system is shouting because you did not hear the whisper.
The navigator in a car says «you have left the route» — and notice: it does not accuse. It does not ask how you could, does not remind you how many times you have taken the wrong turn before. It states the geometry: here is the route, here are you, and the distance between you is growing. Pain is built the same way. There is no morality in it and no revenge — only measurement. The judge is a figure we draw onto it ourselves.
Now imagine the opposite: a person who feels no pain at all. Such people exist — a rare congenital condition in which the pain signal never reaches awareness. It sounds like a dream, and in reality it is one of the most dangerous things that can happen to a body: a person breaks a bone and keeps walking, puts a hand on a stove and notices by the smell. A body without pain destroys itself, because it does not know it is being destroyed. Now translate that to the soul — and you will see the people who have taught themselves to feel nothing. They have not solved the problem. They have taped over the light.
The strength of the pain is the speed at which you are moving away from yourself.
«What did I do to deserve this» and «what is this for»
When it hurts, the first question that rises from inside is «what did I do to deserve this?» Take that question apart. It points into the past: it looks for a guilt, a crime to which the pain would be the sentence. It turns the world into a tribunal and you into the accused. And above all it is useless: even if you find the answer, nothing changes, because the past cannot be edited.
Turn the question ninety degrees: not «what did I do to deserve this» but «what is this for». Why have these circumstances arisen? Where are they turning me? What is this pain steering me away from, and what is it pushing me towards? «What for» looks forward. The fact stays exactly the same — but a vector suddenly grows out of it. Pain stops being a verdict and becomes data.
Another proverb breaks at this point — «time heals». It does not. Time anaesthetises: it dulls, it scars over, it teaches you to walk around the sore place. Only understanding heals — the moment you read the message the pain was carrying and change your movement. Until the message is read, life will keep re-sending it — the same circumstances with different faces. Have you noticed how the same situations return to a person for years? That is not cruel fate. That is an unread letter.
Where does the pain of the soul most often come from? From the gap between «I need to» and «I want to». The mind says «I need to» — it builds out of the past, out of other people’s rules, out of fear. The soul says «I want to» — it knows the route. When a person lives for years on «I need to» alone, the soul first speaks quietly, then aches, then hurts at full volume. That is not a malfunction. It is the only way it has left to reach you.
Why an engine
Now the main thing. An engine is a device that turns combustion into motion. Something inside it has to burn for the car to move. Pain works the same way: what burns in it is the old — a habit, a role, a relationship you have outgrown, an idea of yourself that has become too tight. While all of that stays intact, there is nothing to run on.
Look honestly: when did you actually change? Not in the comfortable periods. A person who is full and content does not search — there is no reason to. Nobody gets up from a soft armchair. Every real movement of mine began when staying put became more painful than walking — and I suspect it is the same for you. It is an unpleasant truth, but it has a symmetrical side: unhappiness is not the end of happiness. Unhappiness is the beginning of the road towards it — the first station where you finally unfold the map.
There is a deeper layer still. Cold is not a force of its own but the absence of heat. Darkness is the absence of light. And pain, in the same way, is not a separate creature hunting you: it is the absence of love in one specific place of your life. It does not say «the world is bad». It points a finger: here — here you are living without love. Without love for the work, for the person beside you, for yourself. And in doing so it performs an astonishing service: it shows where love has to arrive. The needle of a compass is not the north — but without it the north cannot be found.
And one more property for which I am grateful to pain: it always happens now. The mind can live anywhere — in regrets about the past, in anxieties about the future — but pain returns you to the present instantly, like a clap of hands by your ear. And the point of creation is only now: nothing can be made out of the past or the future; you can only create out of this second. So pain forcibly brings you to the one place where anything can be changed. A harsh alarm clock — but an alarm clock, not an executioner.
That is why I do not wish you a life without pain — the living do not have such lives. I wish you to hear it at the first whisper, while it is still irritation and not despair. To ask «what is this for» rather than «what did I do to deserve it». And not to tape over the light when it comes on. Pain is finite: it goes out at the exact moment you return to the route — because the signal is no longer needed.
Happiness is the felt presence of love. Pain is the needle that points the way back to it.
