Silence: The Language the Source Speaks

Evgeny Fleysher · 11 July 2026

Silence is not the absence of sound. That is how the dictionary defines it, but the dictionary describes acoustics, not silence. In physics the minus has no nature of its own: darkness is the absence of light, cold the absence of heat, and you cannot «switch darkness on» — only switch the lamp off. Out of habit we place silence in the same row: there was sound, the sound stopped, silence-as-emptiness remained. But with silence everything is the other way round. Noise is not primary. Silence is primary, and noise is merely what screens it for a while, the way furniture screens the floor it stands on.

Noise is the absence of silence — not the other way round.

Turn the familiar formula over and the term stops being domestic and becomes spiritual. Because if silence is primary, then it is not «nothing» but «everything, before it has sounded»: the ground, the background, the vessel. What different traditions have called by different names, and what I call the Source. And then the question «why do I need silence» stops being a question of hygiene — earplugs, noise-cancelling, a house out of town — and becomes a question of connection: in what language am I being spoken to, and why do I not hear it.

The canvas the sound is painted on

Take any piece of music and remove the pauses — you will get not music but pressure on the eardrum. A note exists because before it and after it there is silence: it outlines the sound the way a canvas outlines a brushstroke, the way the white field of a page outlines a letter. A painter knows this with his body: paint does not exist without canvas, and the cleaner the canvas, the more precisely the colour sounds. In other words, silence is not the gap between sounds. Silence is what sound is made of and what it returns into.

Now carry this over from acoustics to consciousness, because the real noise is not outside the window. The real noise is inside: the commentary on every event, the argument with people who are not in the room, the replay of yesterday’s conversation, the rehearsal of tomorrow’s. The brain generates this stream without pause — that is its work; it was made to calculate, compare and defend. But notice: the whole stream is about the past and about the future. About «already happened» and «might yet happen». There is not one second of «now» in it. And the point of creation is only now — which means the inner noise is a way of never being present in the one place where creating is possible at all.

Two answers: the word and the sensation

Ask yourself about something that matters — «is this my work», «is this my person», «am I going the right way» — and listen to what comes. Two answers will come, and they speak different languages. The brain will answer in words: arguments, points for and against, references to experience — that is, to the past. The soul will answer without words — with a sensation: warmth or cold, expansion or contraction, lightness or weight somewhere under the ribs. The brain’s answer is verbal. The soul’s answer is non-verbal. And here is the catch: a word is always louder than a sensation. While the text is running inside, the sensation cannot be heard — the way you cannot hear the person opposite you in a restaurant where every table is shouting: he speaks, he speaks the truth, he speaks to you — but he says it once, and quietly.

The soul answers with a sensation. To hear the answer, you have to stop answering yourself.

So silence is not the luxury of the contemplative but the technical condition of the connection. Water reflects the sky only while its surface is still; touch it and the sky shatters into ripples, though the sky has gone nowhere. In the same way the Source never falls silent — what falls silent is our capacity to hear. It speaks constantly, but it speaks the language of silence, that is, the language of states, sensations, the fine «yes» and «no» — while we wait for text from it, a memo, an instruction. We will wait in vain. Instructions are written by the brain. The Source — sounds.

Emptiness as a resource

The creator is usually frightened with emptiness: the white canvas, the blank page, the fear of the first stroke. But ask anyone who has genuinely created — emptiness is not the enemy; emptiness is the resource. An empty canvas is the not-yet-chosen everything: any painting is possible while it stays empty, and every line drawn reduces the number of possible ones. Attention is built the same way. Attention is your creating force, and, like a canvas, it is finite: whatever the noise occupies is taken away from life. You create what you look at — which means the question «what fills my day» actually reads: «what am I creating right now?»

And here silence turns from metaphor into practice. You do not have to leave for the mountains. Step out of the house in the morning and try to hear not the traffic but what lies underneath it: how the air moves, how a leaf turns, how behind the general hum something stands unmoving. This is not a poetic exercise; it is tuning the receiver: you shift attention from the loud to the quiet — that is, from the mechanical to the living. Better to hear life in the movement of a petal than death in the hum of asphalt. The hum tells you nothing — it is the same yesterday and tomorrow. The petal tells you everything: that the world is alive, that it moves, that it moves now — and that you are the one who noticed.

What is all this for? Because a state you have actually heard is the only material from which anything real is made. You can build a house out of «I need to» — it will stand, and it will weigh on you. To create out of «I want to», out of that quiet «yes» that arrives as a sensation, there is only one way — to hear it first. And it is heard in one place only: in the silence that is not after the sound and not before the sound, but under the sound — always.

Silence is the language of the Source. Everything we say in words is already a translation.

So do not ask for a louder sign. There will be no louder — only noise gets louder. Make yourself quieter: for a minute, for a breath, for one movement of a petal. And what you hear in that pause will feel very much like love — because that is what it is.
